The aim is to tackle many of Assynt’s most iconic ascents alongside coastal paths\, immersing yourself in the elemental beauty and solitude that define this remarkable corner of the Highlands. \nLove the idea of discovering Assynt\, but prefer gentler days out? Stay at the Culag Hotel and join us for individual walks that match your comfort level — there is something for everyone in this landscape. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nLochinver\nThe Village\nLochinver is a thriving fishing village with a natural harbour. It has a good selection of restaurants\, two pubs\, small shops\, and cafes. The stunning white sandy beach of Achmelvich is just a 10-minute drive away\, and there are numerous sandy and rocky bays along this beautiful\, unspoiled coastline. Sailing\, canoeing\, kayaking\, mountain biking\, hill walking\, fishing\, and climbing are all available locally. The area is a haven for wildlife\, with deer regularly seen close to the cottage and sometimes wandering in the garden. Ospreys\, eagles\, seals\, and otters are all spotted in the immediate area. There are superb walks and climbs direct from the house\, and the dramatic peaks of Suilven\, Stac Pollaidh\, Canisp\, Quinag\, and Ben More Assynt dominate the skyline of this wild and unspoiled Highland region. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nHighlights\nBespoke tailor made trips\n• Summit classic Assynt peaks\, including Suilven\, Quinag\, and Ben More Assynt. \n• Explore the wild Achmelvich–Clachtoll coastline\, with turquoise bays and ancient rock formations and a guided walk with the local ranger at Clachtoll Beach\, discovering its ancient geology\, Iron Age broch\, and rich coastal wildlife. \n• Experience some of Scotland’s oldest landscapes\, sculpted by ice and time. \n• Stay in the heart of Lochinver\, surrounded by lochs\, mountains\, and sea. \n• Celebrate a week of Highland adventure with good company\, local food\, and breathtaking views. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nAccommodation\nCottages or a Hotel\nOur stay is close to the village; we have secured a cottage with a capacity of 8 max based on two sharing or 6 with a few singles. If you cannot be accommodated here\, we suggest you source your own accommodation nearby; small cottages are available or a few guest houses. The Culag Hotel offers a very comfortable stay and is nearby to the cottage. \nEvening meals – We have researched some good places to eat such as Delilah’s’ and Peet’s which are within walking distance. There is also the Lochinver Larder who do famous pies which we can take away and warm up at the house. On our days of eating in\, we plan to use the local services. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Assynt Highlands  \nThis itinerary is a planned outline and may be adjusted according to weather conditions\, group fitness\, or local advice. Assynt’s mountain weather can change quickly\, so routes or sequence may vary to ensure safety and the best possible experience each day. \n  \n\n\n\nItinerary\nExploring Assynt’s Peaks and Coastline\, Scotland\nThis flexible itinerary may adjust to weather\, fitness levels\, and local advice to ensure safety and the best experience. Day 1 (Sat\, May 30) begins with arrival in Lochinver\, settling in\, and an optional walk before a welcome dinner. Day 2 (Sun\, May 31) tackles the iconic Suilven (731 m)\, a challenging but rewarding 20 km hike celebrated with summit views\, cake\, and whisky. Day 3 (Mon\, June 1) features Quinag (808 m)\, a dramatic ridge walk with three Corbett summits and panoramic views\, with an easier option for those preferring a shorter route. Day 4 (Tue\, June 2) offers a gentler day exploring the Clachtoll coastline with a local ranger\, discovering geology\, wildlife\, and history. Day 5 (Wed\, June 3) ascends Breabag via the Bone Caves\, traversing a rugged ridge before descending to Inchnadamph. Day 6 (Thu\, June 4) brings a steep but stunning circuit of Ben Mor Coigach and Sgùrr an Fhìdhleir\, offering spectacular sea and mountain vistas. Day 7 (Fri\, June 5) concludes with a short but striking climb up Stac Pollaidh (612 m) and optional time at Achmelvich beach\, before Day 8 (Sat\, June 6) ends the adventure with breakfast and farewells. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nTerrain and Fitness\nWhat do you need to know?\nTerrain & Fitness – This trip is graded Moderate–Strenuous (4/5) overall. Expect a mix of maintained paths\, rough moorland\, boulder fields\, and short scrambly sections on certain peaks. Daily outings last 6–8 hours\, with up to 900–1\,000 m of ascent on big mountain days. You will need a good level of fitness and prior experience in UK mountain terrain. \n\n\n\n\nThe Finer Points\nHow this trip works\nWe are a guiding provider\, not a tour operator. To keep your choices flexible and costs transparent. If group accommodation is arranged (such as a shared house)\, we will source and coordinate the booking on behalf of all participants. The total cost will then be divided between those staying\, and payment will be collected in advance to secure the property collectively. If you choose to stay in alternative accommodation\, you will be responsible for arranging and paying for your own booking directly. SUMMARY:Beginner's Navigation for Outdoor Adventures
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun and interactive small group workshop designed to introduce you to the basics of navigation for outdoor adventures. We’ll begin with a short indoor session covering essential map reading skills and route planning\, then we’ll head outdoors to put those skills into practice on a short journey. \nThe outdoor portion will follow mainly established tracks\, with some shorter sections off-track across gently undulating terrain. Suitable for all levels of fitness — we will not be covering huge amounts of distance and will be stopping often for chats\, you just need to be comfortable spending a few hours outdoors. Hopefully the weather will be great so we can enjoy the views while we’re at it! If not\, the course will go on\, so do dress accordingly (more on that below). \nRefreshments will be provided during the indoor session to fuel your brain for the adventure! Feel free to bring your own favourite snacks or a packed lunch if you’d like to nosh during the lessons. \nWhere: Old School Byre\, Achnacarnin\, IV27 4JG. Find us on Google Maps. \nWhat to bring: \n\nIdeally you will have your own map and compass\, though if you don’t have the means we can certainly share.\nFor maps\, I recommend one of the following: Harvey Superwalker Assynt\, OS Landranger Map 15\, or Ordnance Survey Explorer 442\nFor a compass\, I recommend a Silva Expedition 4 or similar.\nClothing – Sturdy waterproof boots\, waterproof jacket and trousers\, warm layers\, hat and gloves. We’ll be outdoors for a few hours\, often standing around\, so dress warmly.\nFood & Drink – Snacks and water to keep you going. Bring a packed lunch if you’d like.\nPersonal First Aid – I’ll carry a group first aid kit\, but do bring any personal medications you may require.\nOptional but useful – Small rucksack\, sit mat\, notebook & pencil\, trekking poles.\n\nWhether you’re brand new to navigation or just looking to brush up on the basics\, this is a great opportunity to build confidence and enjoy time outdoors. \nRough itinerary: \n\n11:30am: Meet and greet for snacks\, tea\, coffee\, intros\, etc.\n11:45am – 12:30pm: Indoor instruction on basic map reading\, map scales\, route planning\, orienting the map\, compass usage\n12:30pm – 2:30pm: Outdoor journey of about 2.5km practicing skills; we’ll also layer in new skills like pacing and contours\n2:30pm: Return to the start for a debrief and questions\n\nYour leader \nAll navigation experiences are led by me\, Monica Shaw\, a summer Mountain Leader\, qualified first aider\, and an all-around open-minded and enthusiastic person who loves the outdoors and experiencing nature with like-minded people.
