Breabag, a quiet Corbett near Ben More Assynt

March 24, 2025 by Monica

This is less of a trip report and more of a feature on one of my favourite local hills, Breabag, just south of Ben More Assynt. An ascent of Breabag is a shortish 11km round trip from the Bone Caves car park (NC2529 1788). These caves are worth a visit in themselves – natural limestone caves named after the discovery of bones from animals like wolves, ears, fox, and link, now extinct in Scotland. Continue past the Bone Caves and up into the hills beyond to discover the wonderful little hill.

What makes Breabag such a delight? Well, it’s less frequently visited than other nearby hills, which is always an attraction. On this occassion we didn’t see any other people – bliss! I also like it for the terrain – few boulder fields need to be negotiated, in fact much of the ground is delightful to walk on, and also makes for great wild camping. It’s final perk is its short distance, making it handy for days when you want to get out but don’t want to invest in a huge shlep to get up high and catch an awesome view.

On this trip, we set off in the afternoon and walked for a couple hours before settling on a pitch below the summit next to a handy burn. The camp was a treat. Dry ground, and some delicious refreshments. Mark upped the wild camping ante by bringing a flask of ice for equinox G&Ts (another handy use of the King Thermos Food Flask I hadn’t thought of!).

And just how cute is this Stanley Flask? It comes with four little shot glasses, too, a so-called “Stanley Adventure Pre-Party Shot Glasses Set + Hip Flask**”. We love it. (**That’s an Amazon affiliate link, FYI. So I might get a kickback if you buy something after clicking that – thanks!)

Dinner was one of our dehydrated chilli meals with tasty masa harina corn bread, all garnished with lime, cheese, and fresh habanero chilli. The stuff wild camping dreams are made of.

It was a treat to wake up to clear skies and catch the first rays of sunshine from the top of Breabag. We were back at the van before 9am and back home by 10:30am for a full’s days work, reminded that it’s worthwhile to sieze these moments when you can and enjoy a night outdoors, even amidst other life responsibilities!
