Wild Camping

Wild camping is what first inspired Eat Sleep Wild many years ago, when it began as a blog where I wrote about my wild camping trips around the UK. I’ve now amassed over 100 nights spent in a tent, and it is by far my favourite way to experience the outdoors. Nothing pleases me more than to inspire in others the knowledge, skills, and confidence to sleep outside, surrounded by nature.

Trust me: wild camping is far safer than staying at a campsite!

Trips are led by me, Monica Shaw, a summer Mountain Leader, qualified first aider, and an all-around open-minded and enthusiastic person who loves the outdoors and experiencing nature with like-minded people.

  • Learn the skills to confidently remain safe, self-sufficient, and happy in the wild overnight
  • Experience the superb wellbeing that wild camping affords
  • Discover amazing spots to wild camp throughout the Scottish Highlands
  • Learn wild camping essential skills such as picking a location, setting up camp, cooking, and of course, bathroom etiquette in the wild

Intro to Wild Camping Hikes

What to expect:

  • Two full days out in beautiful Assynt tailored to the group and of course the weather
  • Plenty of time for discussion and demos on all things wild camping
  • Basic navigation practice so you can stay safe and happy in the wild
  • Time to enjoy the peace and solitude at camp
  • Hikes to scenic locations and possibly a summit as time and weather permit
  • Pre-meet video chat to discuss the kit and the plan

You’ll need all the essentials for a Scotland day hike (see my kit list) plus additional supplies for wild camping:

  • Large 60+ litre rucksack
  • Tent
  • Sleeping bag
  • Camp stove + gas + utensils
  • Camp food and snacks for 2 days
  • Toiletries and trowel

I am happy to advise you on gear choices ahead of time.

Am I fit enough for wild camping?

We aim to make our experiences accessible for all and while you don’t need to be an athlete to join our wild camps, but you do need a bit of basic fitness to walk for two days in hilly conditions while carrying a heavier pack. These won’t be mountain marathons, but relaxed hikes with lots of breaks along the way. If you’re at all concerned about fitness or ability, consider joining a bespoke trip that’s tailored precisely to you. As long as you can put one foot in front of the other, you can do this!

Bespoke Wild Camping Outings

Bespoke trips are totally customised for you and suited to groups of 1-4. Take a short journey to a remote loch for quiet solitude or scale a mountain for a summit camp you’ll never forget. Pricing depends on the size of group and number of days. If you’re interested, contact me by clicking on the link below:
