Our Experience

Kylesku Hotel is probably one of the more upmarket dining spots along the west coast of the NC500 (and also I hear a very nice place to stay). Its lochside location is undeniably spectacular—perched right by the Kylesku Bridge with sweeping views across Loch Glendhu.

We visited in February 2023, back when we were still just visitors to the area (not yet permanent residents). It was part of a road trip north to celebrate our anniversary and Mark’s birthday. The day before, we’d hiked up Ben Wyvis in blustery conditions, so a warm lunch in a quiet restaurant felt like just the kind of treat we deserved.

The restaurant was nearly empty when we arrived so we got a prime spot by the window. The staff were kind and welcoming, happy for us to spread out across two tables and even use our laptops while we figured out our next move.

The place is known for its seafood so I went with the fish soup, which was certainly tasty. There was clear attention made to preparation and presentation. Along with some bread, fries, and two hot drinks, the bill came to just over £40 (before tip). Not outrageous, but certainly not cheap for a light lunch. And based on the Google reviews, I’d say this place is known as well for its higher prices as it is for its delicious seafood. (Locals can apply for a discount card that gives 30% off meals, which tells you something about the markup). Now that we live in Assynt, we’ve since picked up one of those cards, though haven’t yet been back to put it to use.

Kylesku Hotel is part of a family hotels, including Newton Lodge down the road which also has a fancy-looking restaurant and bar that we’ve yet to visit (but will do soon, armed with our discount card – watch this space!).

Travel Tips

There’s a sweet little craft shop / shed right next to Kylesku Hotel that’s worth a gander: The Old Ferry Craft Co-Op.
