Snowdonia

It’s hard to beat Snowdonia for sensational walking and wild camping routes. Escape from the crowds in the Rhinogs or challenge yourself on the high peaks of the Glyderau and Carneddau. We’ve had some of the best times wild camping in Snowdonia, and also some of the biggest challenges. Read on in our trip reports below:

Wild Camping in the Carneddau

This wild camping trip in the Carneddau area of Snowdonia was inspired by the “Hut Among The Hills” chapter in Wilderness Weekends by Phoebe Smith. Her book details a relatively low level circuit with a one night stay in Dulyn bothy. We adapted it into a two night trip taking in some of the major peaks of …

The Bochlwyd Horseshoe (Tryfan and the Glyders)

The Bochlwyd Horseshoe is a challenging all-day scrambling adventure around the Glyderau region of Snowdonia. The route includes four popular scrambles: Tryfan North Ridge, Tryfan South Ridge, Bristly Ridge and Y Gribin. I had the immense fun of completing the Bochlwyd Horseshoe with Andrew and our dog Lucky on a sweltering August Bank Holiday weekend. …

Cadair Idris Walk and Wild Camp

Cadair Idris has been on my hit list for a few years. Knowing it’s one of the most popular summits in Snowdonia, I’ve been saving it for a weekday, when I happened to be free, and when the weather promised great views. I finally got the chance this July, which happens also to be my …

Rhinog Traverse from Talsarnau to Barmouth

The Rhinogs (also known in Welsh by the plurals Rhinogydd or Rhinogau) are a mountain range in Snowdonia, known for the rugged and wild terrain. It’s far less popular than other areas of Snowdonia such as Snowdon, the Glyderau, and Carneddau, and so a great place to truly get away from it all (particularly on …

Busy times at ESW HQ restocking after a busy Chris Busy times at ESW HQ restocking after a busy Christmas. I was accidentally sent some red chillies for my Trailblazer Hot Sauce. I could have sent then back but they looked so good I decided to keep them. Currently thinking I’ll smoke them with hickory, but who knows! … there could be a special edition Trailblazer coming soon!
Escape to a corner of our neighbourhood that actua Escape to a corner of our neighbourhood that actually has some hills! An invigorating 7-ish miles from Bisely with better than expected weather, two happy hounds, great views, hidden gems, and predictably much mud! Unparalleled conversation provided by the always entertaining @simasunflower, fellow female foodie entrepreneur, dog lover, strong person, and all around badass.

Campervan cooking. First meals! Appreciating that Campervan cooking. First meals! Appreciating that a little bit of convenience can go a long way while still enabling great food and fresh ingredients. Prep-prepped #barbacoa made for killer campervan tacos with shredded cabbage, avocado, and our house-made hot sauce, salsa macha, and pickles (all in the ESW shop). Lunches were made easy with some minestrone I cooked and dehydrated at home. We also used some of @desihealthycurry's curry kits to make a deeelish fish stew and cauliflower curry on our first night. All made on the #jetboil - no kitchen installed just yet. Good times! More tales of our first night out on the blog (link in profile).⠀

Been a while since I’ve posted a #sourdough loaf Been a while since I’ve posted a #sourdough loaf so here’s a shot of this week’s bake (cuz, you know, #lockdownbaking and all!). I’ve been taking some downtime this January to recover from Christmas (and other things 🦠) but am slowly ramping things back up. One thing never stops, though, and that’s my happy sourdough starter, fed with a blend of organic rye and white flours from @shiptonmill. If you’re wanting to have a go at sourdough yourself, you can buy sourdough starter and eBook over in the shop (the eBook is only £3 and the starter comes with a free copy so why not). I’m so chuffed by all the folks out there who’ve been having success with my instructions, focused on baking in a bog standard home oven. Head over to shop.eatsleepwild.com or click the link in my bio and click on Fermented Foods under Basecamp Essentials. Happy baking!
